"Which racket should I buy?"
This is one of the most common questions we get from our students. There are many articles out there that recommend specific rackets for beginners so we will not be doing that, but we would like to help you understand what to look out for when shopping for a racket.
Tennis rackets differ in head size, weight, balance, frame construction, stiffness, length, grip size, string pattern, types of string, string tension etc., but for beginners buying your first racket, we would like to highlight the 2 most important things to consider - weight and grip size.
Adult rackets usually range from 260g to 315g (without strings). With lighter rackets, you get more power and with heavier rackets, you get more control. For beginners, we do not recommend too heavy a racket as it will be challenging to manoeuvre and may lead to injuries like tennis elbow.
Female Adult Beginners - we recommend 270g to 290g.
Male Adult Beginners - we recommend 280g to 300g.
Grip sizes range from 0 (4in) to 5 (4 5/8 in). A grip that is too small may cause you to use your wrist too much, and a grip that is too big may be difficult to hold onto, resulting in more muscle strength to keep the racket in your hand. Both scenarios may contribute to the development of tennis elbow.
Female Adult Beginners - we recommend grip size 1 (4 1/8 in) or 2 (4 1/4 in) as females generally have smaller hands. If you have longer fingers, you may consider bigger sizes.
Male Adult Beginners - we recommend grip size 2 (4 1/4 in) or 3 (4 3/8 in). Consider bigger sizes if you have larger hands.
To determine the grip size that is suitable for you, hold the racket and place the index finger of your other hand like in the image above. Your index finger should sit comfortably with no extra space. If you are in between sizes, go with the smaller size. You can add an overgrip later to increase the size slightly.
A racket is a very personal thing and so there is no such thing as "the best brand". As you progress in your play, you may start developing your own preferences with regards to the different racket specs and you may be looking at your next racket sooner than you think. Hence in our opinion, just get any racket first and start hitting away!
Happy shopping!
